Notes from the Executive Producer

The project began with the following brief:

“A series of short dramas around a relationship, playing with linear time and narrative subjectivities. Five to six three to four minute scenes using the same actors, all around a central 'problem' in the relationship - this could be sex, trust, selfishness, commitment; something for the group to decide.”

Through a series of workshops with the She/He studio we expanded and departed from the brief for both creativite and practical reasons, ending up with two heterosexual couples, rather than one couple, in relationships. Three teams of five then wrote a short drama around each couple. It was not stipulated which part of the relationship each group was to cover, rather the broad character briefs were taken, and shaped into a series of unique narratives. These works were written, shot and edited within each group, and only at an advanced stage of post-production did the entire She/He studio come together to watch all six dramas. Fascinating narrative collisions and synchronicities became apparent. At this point the screening order was debated and settled upon.

The Concept

She/He is an experimental film production project performed by final year RMIT Media students. She/He explores a way of producing 6 different short films, using the same character breakdowns, but with different writers, directors, producers, and film crews. Each crew were provided with detailed descriptions of the four main characters (two couples) and asked to produce a 4-6 minute film capturing a moment or moments in their relationship. The films all interrelate, and reveal the different takes on each couples’ relationship.
